LOVEWELL "FUN DAY" TO LIVE UP TO ITS NAME

Archery, fishing, log races, Frisbees: event offers something for everyone

MANKATO -- The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), Lovewell Lake Association, and Lovewell Marina at Lovewell State Park are sponsoring the annual Lovewell Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 5. Events begin with registration for the 3-D archery shoot from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Classes for the archery shoot include finger and mechanical release and divisions for men, women, and youth. A $5 entry fee is required.

A co-ed (three men/three women) mud volleyball tournament begins at 10 a.m. The tournament will be double elimination, with a $10 entry fee per team and a 16-team limit. A mud volleyball tournament for youth 12 and younger will also be held. Youth teams will consist of two to six players and will be single elimination, with no entry fee. Pre-registrations for both the adult and youth mud volleyball tournaments are requested at the Lovewell State Park Office by Thursday, Aug. 3.

Other events scheduled for the Fun Day include a BassMaster-sanctioned casting contest at 9 a.m. and minnow races at 11 a.m., both at the marina. At the Pioneer Day-Use Area (playground), log races will begin at noon, and a water balloon toss is scheduled for 2 p.m. A waterslide contest will begin at 3 p.m., and a Frisbee-throwing contest will be held at 4 p.m. These events are for all ages.
An Outdoor Cook-off Contest will also be held at the Pioneer Day-Use Area. Chefs must register by 2 p.m. at the park office. Judges will include the first 100 people who contribute a $5 donation for a taste-testing ticket. (Donations are used for prizes at Lovewell State Park’s Special Events.)

Judging tickets will be available at the cook-off area at 5 p.m. Judging will start at 6 p.m. and end by 6:30 p.m. Additional samples will be available, depending on availability of food entries.
